Escaping the Blind
#61
The hillbilly stared at the container before it blew up in his face. A shot was fired from his gun, echoing throughout the area, and hitting the car Wayne was hiding behind. The man caught in the explosion began to scream and choke from the nasty chemicals around him. Instinctively, he dropped to the ground and started to roll in his attempts to put out the flames. In the chaos, the 'billy tossed his gun to the side which slid closer to Wayne.

The bandages that Violet tossed splattered on the man's back as he rolled, the alcohol oozing out every time he rolled on top of it. The flames grew brighter and higher as did his screams of pain and terror. Around him was a small pool of fire thanks to the alcohol he continued to unintentionally squeeze out from the bandages.

The man holding Ezra at gunpoint turned to see his friend on fire and growled at the fact that he saw Wayne dash for cover.

"You think you're slick?! I'll kill you!"

Before he was able to do anything, Ezra grabbed the gun, pointing it away from him, as both men struggled to wield the weapon. The assault rifle fired a mass of bullets as the struggled continued. Boris was careful to sneak behind the hillbilly and put him in a headlock, forcing him to release his weapon and giving Ezra a chance to take it away. Without hesitation, Ezra pointing the rifle at the redneck.

"Not so tough now, huh?" Ezra sweated.

"Think again!" The man yelled before pulling around a hidden firearm from his belt. He aimed at Ezra and fired several shots.

He was slammed to the ground by Boris which sent the gun flying out of the man's hand. While pinning the man to the floor, he stared at Ezra who had dropped to one knee clutching his left arm. He had been shot and was bleeding. He bit his lip, holding the urge to scream.

The nearby Blinders were finally awake from their comatose state due to all the noise and apparently, more were coming to their location. Cracking, popping, and clicking noises were heard all around and estimated that there were around a dozen Blinders coming to their area. Soon, they came out from behind buildings and from under the rubble. Boris pushed himself to his feet and pulled the man up with him now that he was disarmed. Upon seeing the mass of Blinders coming to their direction, the Hillbilly screamed for his life, trying to free himself from Boris's grip. Boris held the man tightly as he noticed Ezra rise to his feet and direct Boris to follow him.

The second Hillbilly, at this point, had already burned to death or suffocated due to the chemical. His screams no doubt brought Blinders to the scene and they were all rushing to the direction of the noise. Their attention was now directed to the still screeching 'billy, and, in turn, Boris and Ezra.

Damn, we need to distract the Blinders away from us... That screaming redneck alerted half the damn area with his stupid gun! If we don't create a diversion, we'll be surrounded!

Wayne puts on his gas mask because the chemicals may be still too toxic and flammable to breathe around normally. “I wonder if it can burn through these blinders; it can set fire on literally anything; hence, those girls did a good thing by tossing that good ol’ rag into the flames.” He thought to himself after taking a deep breath. It was a risky move no doubt; he could have just followed Ezra and Boris to safety, but Wayne knows that a single sound would set off those rednecks like a pack of hyenas and fire off their rounds, alerting the blinders anyways.

He looks over the car, seeing that the screams and the gunshot fire alerted a mass of Blinders rushing in. At first, he was planning to leave them to die. “Yep, those guys are goners, time to bail…” However, his ears picked up noises near his direction; they are scrambling from all over.

“Tsk… damn…” Wayne grabbed the gun that slid near him. “They’re attracted to sounds right?” Using the bottom handle of the gun, he slammed it on the car to cause its alarms to blare loud.

Violet moved to open the driver's door of the car she and Molly were hiding behind and gestured for Boris to come close and take the redneck with him. "Knock that fucker out and stick 'im in here! We'll lean him on the car horn so they can surround the cars and clear a path to get to their snack." Violet looked at Molly and signaled her to stand up. "You better get movin' doc. It smells awful... eugh!" She pulled the collar of her shirt over her nose, mostly because it was just a bad odor.

Molly peeked out and scanned the others to see who was hurt, her eyes eventually locking onto Ezra's arm. Quickly, she made her way across knowing there was no immediate danger now. She grabbed the gun Boris made the hillbilly drop on her way to Ezra, carefully avoiding the area where the torched man was laying. "Can you walk? Your blood is going to be the next thing they'll seek out after the barbecue finishes," Molly asked while quickly snatching a tourniquet from her med kit, trying to discern where any bullets struck his arm. "But the sooner I stop the bleeding, the better your chances of getting out of here conscious will be. I'm not taking any bullets out until we get away."

Boris did not hesitate and immediately played the hillbilly in a sleeper hold, and within a few seconds, the man's screams were silenced. Boris rushed to Violet with the unconscious man and leaned him against the horn of the car. The noise was loud enough to echo for miles and instantly alerted the nearby Blinders. They all perked their heads up and stared in the direction of the car before rushing towards it.

"Quickly, ve must go!" Boris said as he slammed the door shut to trap the billy. He urged Violet to follow him to the nearby store. "Ve can hide there and escape through da back exit."

The alarm of the car that Wayne boomed out and the Blinders stopped in their path before turning to the second car. The noise seemed to disorientate them because they didn't know where to head to first. The Blinders stood still, almost as if gathering what action they should take next, twitching and gargling for a few minutes. Eventually, they split in half, one swarm going for each car. Ezra noticed their pause and narrowed his eyes before urging Molly to a broken down store that connected to several other buildings.

"C'mon, we need to get out of the open first," Ezra said to Molly. "That store is connected to the mall, we can sneak inside to avoid Blinders and appear out the other side. Maybe you can salvage some stuff along the way." Ezra then turned to Wayne and grew visibly annoyed at his very risky stunt, however, he didn't want to abandon the man. "Wayne, get your ass over here, damnit!"

“It’s time to move then…” Wayne got up, seeing that a group of Blinders are going to direction of here he was hiding. He got up and went around, but he can’t help and noticed that the blinders split up. “Never seen a blinder do that… maybe I’m overthinking things.” He dashed off towards Erza, seeing that they’re going to the store. "We're heading in there, huh?"

"Lead the way!" Violet sprinted over to Boris and followed him while keeping an eye out for any wandering stragglers. Now that she didn't have the bandage protecting her wounded hand, she folded her jacket's sleeve to cover it as she readied her bat just in case. "Please don't get split up, please don't get split up..." she whispered to herself.

"It's the only way to get away from here without bumping into anything else. Those alarms won't last forever..." Molly said to Wayne as she started powerwalking toward the store, checking how much ammo was in the pistol to find exactly four bullets. One for each of them if they had no other way out besides suicide. "Let's hope the mall isn't completely infested either." Molly kept close to Ezra on his injured side as a flank.

Boris trailed to the same store Ezra, Molly, and Wayne snuck inside, keeping a close eye on Violet and any Blinders nearby. The blaring noise of the car horn continued to distract the Blinders long enough for Boris to guide Violet back with Ezra, Molly, and Wayne. He still remained careful not to set off any other alarms or loud noises.

Ezra, trying to move forward, realized how much blood he was losing. He felt a bit lightheaded and decided to move behind the broken counter of the store they were in. Not too far off, just past the mess of chairs and tables, was the opening to the mall complex. Everything looked vacant, dirty, and motionless. Despite the car alarms outside, there was an eerie silence within the mall. Luckily, there didn't appear to be any Blinders roaming around inside. As much as he tried to move, Ezra knew that he had to let the doctor check his wound.

He stared angrily at Wayne, knowing half of this was his fault, yet he decided to bite his tongue until he was patched up by the doctor. He knew now was not the best time to scream or make a fuss, not when they aren't exactly out of the clear just yet. In his mind, they were safe, but just for now.

Boris eventually stepped inside the store and let out a sigh of relief, wiping beads of sweat from his forehead. He glanced over at Ezra and how he applied pressure to his wound. He locked eyes with the man and immediately knew what Ezra might need. He removed his large backpack and set it on the ground with a thud, fumbling inside for a certain item. He pulled out a small bottle with the name of the medicine ripped. The only part of the words that were visible was "MORPH..."

"Ezra, got the Morph'," Boris said shaking the bottle. "It should numb zat pain!"

"Give it here," Ezra demanded. Boris complied and tossed the bottle to Ezra. He removed the cap and placed about 5 pills in his hand, ready to consume them. "I hate taking these pills... they make me so numb..."

Wayne observed the area but haven’t seen a single Blinder yet. “Looks like the coast is clear.” He turns to Ezra, noticing that he’s giving him stares, but he chose to ignore it. “Make sure he doesn’t become deadweight by checking his wounds, Doc.” He told Molly. “I managed to swipe something off of those hillbillies—they might be ignorant rednecks, but they got some good stuff on their persons.”

He had a large hunting knife and few bullets for rifle and pistol in the bag, next to several steel containers containing dangerous chemicals. “That fire should continued to burn until it goes out on its own, and considering the blinders, it should have no problem turning a few of them into toast.”

"Right... That's too much," Molly muttered before speaking up with a frown on her face. She firmly gripped Ezra's wrist and snatched away four of the pills, leaving him with only one. "You haven't been taking this much each time you get hurt this bad, have you? Morphine isn't some kind of candy you can scarf down. It's easy to overdose and die from these, not to mention it's addictive specifically for how potent it is." Her terse scolding ended as she firmly wrapped the tourniquet around the arm of the bullet wound so he wouldn't have to hold pressure on it, then taking out several other items from her medical bag to start on cleaning up the blood. "And none of us need a liability if you're so numbed out you can't walk. So you're starting with one and maybe I'll let you have another. Think you can see if the bullet's still in your arm? If it made a clean exit, I can stitch it up no problem. Otherwise, you'll definitely bleed out if I take it out now."

"When you're done, think you can get me some new bandages?" Violet asked Molly, before sheepishly rubbing her neck as the doctor gave her a sharp retort.

"Yeah, after you make yourself useful and find me some more supplies since I'll be busy with this. There's plenty of places to look through. Maybe get yourself some gloves while you're at it." While Violet did help with fueling the explosive, Molly was a bit sore about using her bandages considering how scarce medical-grade supplies have been, especially a necessity like cotton dressing and gauze.

"Fine... but I ain't going by myself," Violet complained, rifling through the newly acquired backpack and coming across the notes again. "Oh yeah, I found this in the bag from that lady's corpse." She took out the baggie with the notebook and the directions. "Kinda strange really, but maybe it makes sense to you guys?" Violet handed Boris the bloodied paper while gingerly taking out the notebook.
